Is this a good first multi pitch ice route?
Sherman route is great for those new to multipitch ice who are capable of climbing WI4. The approach is relatively mild, usually lasting about 45 minutes. The first pitch makes a good warmup.
Are avalanche conditions dangerous or common on The Sherman Route?
No more common than other north facing alpine ice routes with a giant feeder bowl at the top! While we do occasionally have more significant avalanche concerns that prevent us from climbing our intended route we are often able to find good alternatives nearby.
Do I need skis or snowshoes to approach this?
I can't recall a time in over a decade of guiding this route where we needed flotation. Mostly because it's so popular so there is almost always a well trodden trail. In instances where there is a lot of fresh snow we may get slowed down a bit but it is still pretty easy to follow and does not require flotation and traction is only necessary once you get across the river and close to the climb.
