What makes Petit Grepon so classic?
Great rock, solid and spacious belays, and excellent position make this a sought after classic. There are several pitches of great climbing and the unique summit and relatively easy access make it a very enjoyable alpine climb.
Is it better to do in a day or as an overnight?
It really depends on the type of experience you're going for. A single day is a great option when time is limited or you want to really focus on just moving quickly through terrain and feel the flow of things. Bivvying at the base of the route, on the other hand, is a really unique experience with stars overhead and the shadow of the peak looming in the dark. Multiple days also give the opportunity to do other climbs in the area like The Saber, The Foil or swing around to the Andrews Glacier and climb Sharkstooth.
Is lightning or wind a common issue on these ascents?
Guides watch the weather closely. We may frequently need to move start times to much earlier to ensure we can be up and down before afternoon thunderstorms common to Colorado. This can make spring or early fall great times to do this route to avoid some of the weather issues common in summer.
How difficult is the approach?
While the distance is not hugely challenging being just over three miles it does have some elevation gain. This can add some time into the day depending on the level of acclimatization but typically fit climbers don't have too much issue.
