Is it better to learn to lead indoors prior to taking an outdoor sport leading class?
There is some similarity in techniques and belaying when leading indoors. It helps form a basic foundation at a more accessible cost making the return on investment better when you go to lead outside. A sport leading class outdoors is a critical step in the transition from gym to crag to ensure those outdoor skills are learned and some level of judgment developed before taking the sharp end.
What is lead climbing?
When setting up a rope a climber can either walk to the top and build an anchor or start on the ground and clip into protection as they ascend higher up the cliff. Sport leading is clipping fixed bolt protection that has been previously drilled in the rock. Whereas top roping may have an anchor built from natural protection like trees or boulders.
Is leading or top roping better to learn first?
Climbing is all about the progression of skills. Often climbers learn to toprope before learning to lead but both skills have value depending on what types of climbing are most available where you regularly climb. Colorado tends to have more areas where lead climbing is a necessary skill but many of the skills learned from toproping are important to know as well. In the end it really depends on how far you want to take your climbing.
Is lead climbing as safe as top roping?
Climbing has inherent risk and if nobody ever fell we wouldn’t have to bother with the rope. By providing things like an anchor and a belay it allows us to push ourselves more with less concern about getting hurt. Any instance of falling can lead to an impact with another surface. Generally with top roping falls are small so when done well injuries are unlikely. Sport leading requires us to climb above points of protection which means we can fall farther. Learning to belay properly can avoid serious injuries in a sport climbing fall but it can never be made entirely safe.
