Where is the best airport to fly in?
The Gunnison-Crested Butte regional airport is a great option since it drops you right in the middle of everything. It's a very small airport and when ticket prices are right it avoids the five hours of mountain driving from Denver.
What's it like during the Winter/Spring/Summer/Fall?
The Gunnison area has a variety of seasons. Here are some of our favorite parts of each.
Winter: this is usually best for skiing and ice climbing. Rivers are low and there's intermittent snow.
Spring: Things are starting to warm up. Earlier in the spring is a great time to keep ice climbing and get the best backcountry skiing around the 14ers in Lake City. There may be some opportunities for other things like rock climbing or some biking.
Summer: Things are really opening up downtown and you'll find most fair weather outdoor recreation is coming into it's prime. Rock is in great shape, people are rafting and riding and festivals come on a regular basis.
Fall: While the weather is spectacular for rock climbing and sometimes ice climbing later in the fall most people in town are starting to slow down as people head back to school.
Is it a good place to camp?
There are numerous campgrounds just a few minutes outside of town including at Hartman Rocks. This is great for a camping road trip or basecamp for a trip with a variety of different activities.

Gunnison sits at the crossroads of some of the most diverse climbing on Colorado's Western Slope, with two very different destinations within easy reach. Hartman Rocks spreads across the high desert sagebrush just outside town . A sprawling collection of granite domes with featured rock, quartz crystals, and chickenhead holds that make for memorable climbing across a wide range of grades. Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park sits a couple hours west, where ancient walls drop thousands of feet into one of the most dramatic gorges in North America. To the south in Lake City lies the San Juan Mountains with a huge ice park as well as backcountry ice climbs.
The two areas couldn't be more different in character. Hartman Rocks is open, sunny, and approachable. One of the best summer and fall climbing destinations in the state for those building outdoor skills or exploring climbing for the first time. Black Canyon is committing, serious, and unlike anything else in Colorado. It's a destination that demands respect and rewards experienced climbers who come prepared with a guide who knows the walls.
Gunnison itself is a classic Colorado mountain town sitting between Crested Butte to the north and Lake City to the south, making it an easy base for a broader San Juan mountain climbing trip. Colorado Climbing Company's mountain guides know both areas well and can help you make the most of everything the Gunnison region has to offer.
