Do I need to provide a 4WD vehicle to reach the upper trailhead?
Generally yes. We cannot guarantee a vehicle that can reach the upper trailhead. The easiest way to avoid the additional eight or so road miles is to rent a jeep or truck at an airport to ensure both you and the guide can avoid the dusty road walk.
Do you need to be a good climber to do the Crestone Traverse?
There are plenty of hikers who are fit enough to do the climbing moves on the Crestone Traverse. While previous mountain experience and confidence in exposed terrain is helpful anyone with solid fitness who can confront there anxiety around heights can be successful. With the biggest challenge being route finding we’re happy to let you focus on the climbing while we deal with the rest.
Do you do the ‘Reverse Traverse’?
While we typically climb the Crestone Traverse from Peak to Needle every once in a while someone wants to go the other way. This avoids climbing the final headwall and instead rappels down it. There are a few challenging spots to do the traverse in the other direction and this is most often done with climbers who want to do Ellingwood Arete and run over to summit Crestone Peak in the same day.
