Rising steeply above Boulder's western edge, the Flatirons are some of the most recognizable mountain formations in Colorado and one of the most rewarding places to climb on the entire Front Range. The tilted sandstone slabs offer a style of climbing that feels unlike anything else in the state, with long, sustained ridge routes that gain elevation quickly and reward climbers with increasingly dramatic views of Boulder and the plains stretching east toward the horizon.
The Flatirons are accessible enough to be a natural starting point for families and beginner climbers new to the area. Still they are varied enough to keep experienced climbers engaged across dozens of routes and formations. There are a variety of formations from moderate slabs of the First and Second to the more technical and committing lines on steep ridges like The Maiden and Matron. Our guides know the formations intimately and will match the day's objectives to your experience level and goals.
Part of what makes the Flatirons special is the setting. The approach from Chautauqua Park winds through open meadows and ponderosa pines with the formations growing larger with every step. It's the kind of approach that builds anticipation in a way few crags can match. Boulder sits just below, making logistics easy and leaving plenty of options for a post-climb meal or coffee in one of the country's great Front Range towns.
