Who is the Beginner Avalanche Course for?
This course is for skiers, splitboarders, snowshoers, climbers, and other winter travelers who need a foundation for recognizing avalanche terrain and making better decisions.
Is this the same as an AIARE Level 1?
The course is designed as foundational avalanche education. If you need a specific certification or curriculum standard, confirm the current course format with Colorado Climbing Company before booking.
What will I learn?
Topics usually include avalanche terrain recognition, weather and snowpack basics, travel habits, group communication, companion rescue fundamentals, trip planning, and decision-making frameworks.
Do I need backcountry experience?
No extensive experience is required, but you should be comfortable traveling in winter conditions. Skiers and riders should be able to manage ungroomed snow and basic uphill travel if the course involves touring.
Will this make me safe in avalanche terrain?
No course can make avalanche terrain safe. The goal is to help you recognize hazards, communicate better, make more conservative decisions, and understand what to keep practicing.
