Captain Roo’s is located up the road from Silverton in the San Juan Mountains. Once known by a more colorful name it packs challenging and interesting climbing into a shorter approach than some of the other climbs in the area. It is close to the Eureka area and makes an excellent shakedown climb before bigger routes like Stairway to Heaven.
The first pitch is some of the prettiest ice in a cool amphitheater making it one of the prettiest pitches we know of in Colorado. After that you tunnel around in a tight corridor of ice before you're presented with a couple of interesting options to finish (or try both). Despite being three pitches of climbing to the top, the pitches are pretty big and form in interesting ways making for climbing that will challenge you mentally and physically for a full day of ice climbing.
It is a great next step for climbers who have moved beyond doing single pitch somewhere like the Lake City Ice Park or taken our Intro to Ice Climbing Class and want to push their skills on something a little more interesting in the San Juan Mountains.
