Why is All Mixed Up better in the early season?
Often we get the cold before we get the snow and the approach to All Mixed Up is filled with downed trees. It's not terrible when it's low snow but it can be a tedious slog in deep snow conditions and in some cases may lead to a day of no climbing or using a backup location if it's too hard to get to. If you don't want to spend 4 hours getting to the base ask us about recent snows or if anyone has broken trail recently. There is also some avalanche hazard near the top that can be a bit more consequential as the snow piles up.
Is there actually mixed climbing on All Mixed Up?
Generally we try to climb it when it's in the best condition which has a mixture of thin ice and steeper but thicker ice. There are times when there may be some mixed terrain as things sublimate.
Can guides choose a backup objective?
Yes. If All Mixed Up is not in safe or reasonable condition, guides may recommend another RMNP ice climb or a more appropriate training day.
