How is this different from the Lake City Ice Park?

Backcountry trips use natural routes beyond the managed ice park and require more attention to avalanche conditions, approaches, and terrain.

Which routes might we climb?

Common objectives include the Sherman Route and climbs in Cottonwood Creek, chosen based on conditions and your experience.

Can the day be a Full or Extreme Day?

Yes. Final timing depends on route choice, snow conditions, group pace, and how much technical climbing is appropriate.

What skills are helpful?

Basic ice movement, winter layering, and comfort hiking with a pack all help. For harder objectives, multi pitch ice experience is strongly recommended.

Inclusions

The backcountry around Lake City holds some of the longest lasting ice in Colorado. Beyond the Lake City Ice Park, natural routes like the Sherman Route and the climbs of Cottonwood Creek offer full length pitches, real approaches, and a big mountain feel without the crowds of better known areas.

This trip is intentionally flexible. On good days we may climb a longer, more committing route, and when avalanche or ice conditions are less certain guides keep the day focused on movement, mileage, and safe terrain. Having guided the Lake City backcountry for over a decade, we know the alternatives when the plan needs to change.

It is a great progression for climbers who have spent time at the ice park and want to take the next step into backcountry ice. To build skills first, take our Learn to Lead Ice Class or Multipitch Ice Climbing Skills Class.
