Why is Mt. Sherman a good first 14er?
It is simply one of the shortest climbs of any of the 14ers with a good trail. Combined with a road that, while not easy, is still doable with common 2WD cars and a reasonable distance from major population centers this is a day trip most fit people can accomplish. Read more in our blog post about other easier 14er climbs.
Does that mean Mt. Sherman is easy?
It is easier than many 14ers, but it is still a high altitude mountain climb. You still need to be able to hike uphill for several miles, manage your pace at altitude, and balance through rocky terrain. As far as activities go no 14er is ever really easy.
Should I stay in the Front Range for climbing this?
While it's manageable tor drive from the Front Range to climb this you may find you'll feel better acclimated if you spend a night a little higher in nearby Fairplay.
Can this be used as training for harder peaks?
Absolutely. Later in the spring there is good snow for learning basic crampon and self arrest skills. If you're willing to hike for a while you can do some beginner avalanche and rescue skills and there is frequently good intro to backcountry skiing terrain as well.
