Snow climbing is one of the essential skills for alpine terrain with many alpine climbs featuring significant sections of snow or ice. Without these skills many peaks are inaccessible or simply much more dangerous whereas these basic skills can make them a much more casual outing in the mountains.
Expand your Fourteener climbing season or prepare for glacier peaks like Rainier or Denali. Learning to self arrest, use an ice ax, and move efficiently is key to more safely ascending steep snow fields and couloirs.
Please note this course is only offered in select locations and frequently the best conditions for snow climbing are in the spring.
What You'll Learn
If you’ve only ever been hiker or a peak trekker this is the next step in being able to access new terrain. During this Intro to Snow Climbing course participants will learn:
Basic use of crampons and footwork.
Basic movements such as kicking steps, plunge stepping, and traversing slopes.
Self belay, self arrest and how to use an ice ax to climb snow.
Basic snow anchors and rope techniques for steep snow climbing.
How to assess snow quality.
Clothing and gear selection,
After taking this climbing course participants should feel capable of climbing steep snow slopes in unglaciated terrain.

Rates are per person, e.g. 3 people for a Regular Day would be $259/person for a total of $777. Trip start times are custom but generally we recommend 8AM starts for most rock climbing May through September to avoid heat, crowding, and afternoon thunderstorms.

There are several locations that work well for this course due to reliable, high quality snow with minimal approaches. Conditions can change and road closures during different seasons may vary. The venues we recommend are:
Required Skills
No previous climbing experience is necessary. While helpful primarily participants must be able to take care of themselves in cold, wet alpine environments.
Follow Up Climbing Classes
Learning snow climbing technique and skills such as self arrest and anchors are fundamental skills that open the door to the next steps in alpine climbing independently. The following classes are good next steps.

I climbed the Crestone Traverse in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains with Jeremiah in August 2023, owner of the Colorado Climbing Company. Jeremiah was an outstanding guide. Besides utilizing his expertise on the climb, he cooked pizza for dinner and provided bagels for breakfast. He was a great instructor, had a sense of humor, and was patient. He is also an incredibly skilled alpinist. I used several guides this summer on technical climbs and my experience with him was unsurpassed. I am pretty new to ice climbing and I felt like this trip helped me grow tremendously. She was not only a master at all things ice climbing, but was a fantastic teacher. Learning knots, in addition to the art of ice climbing, can be overwhelming but she made it such a blast. We had an 8 hour trip and she somehow managed to keep me pumped the whole time.
