Gunnison, or 'Gunny' to the locals, is the major mountain town west of Salida between the resort area of Crested Butte and the quiet town of Lake City where we do some amazing ice climbing in the winter. It's also the gateway to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. One of the local areas, Hartmann Rocks has a wide variety of granite domes all over the high desert sagebrush. Because of the altitude this makes a great summer and fall location and particularly for beginner climbers or those who want to learn to sport lead. Because of the geology the climbing features many quartz crystals and chickenheads that make for enjoyable climbing. With all the climbing around it may be hard to notice but this is also a great destination for mountain biking and nearby rafting as well. Farther out of town is The Gate a notch carved in the rock by the Lake Fork of the Gunnison. With a variety of cracks that extend from the ground to the summit there is some multi-pitch climbing or just some space for anyone who wants to learn to crack climb. Further south in Lake City there are a number of granite domes on the Alpine Loop and if you get tired of rock climbing check out our spring and winter outings on the beginner 14er ascents we offer there.

I climbed the Crestone Traverse in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains with Jeremiah in August 2023, owner of the Colorado Climbing Company. Jeremiah was an outstanding guide. Besides utilizing his expertise on the climb, he cooked pizza for dinner and provided bagels for breakfast. He was a great instructor, had a sense of humor, and was patient. He is also an incredibly skilled alpinist. I used several guides this summer on technical climbs and my experience with him was unsurpassed. I highly recommend The Colorado Climbing Company for all of your climbing adventures in Colorado.

I am pretty new to ice climbing and I felt like this trip helped me grow tremendously. She was not only a master at all things ice climbing, but was a fantastic teacher. Learning knots, in addition to the art of ice climbing, can be overwhelming but she made it such a blast. We had an 8 hour trip and she somehow managed to keep me pumped the whole time. And as a new climber, she made it such a safe place to learn and ask ALL the questions. I’ve used plenty of guiding services before but these guys are definitely my top choice.

We have a healthy amount of single pitch sport climbing experience, but hadn't done any trad climbing or multi-pitch. Our guide was very knowledgeable of the area, showed great proficiency with setting anchors and protection, and was overall a fun guy to hang out with. We would happily book another trip with them in the future, and would highly recommend them to anyone interested in climbing in Colorado.
