"Sarah and I had an awesome time. We were both impressed by and appreciated the fact that you actually taught us some of the finer points of climbing, rather than just setting a rope and saying "there you go." -Mike, Wisconsin
Winter climbing in Colorado is a completely different ballgame than the spring and summer. Blowing snow and sub-zero temperatures make navigation and progress difficult. Understanding how to climb in balance on snow and the basic use of crampons and ice axes is very important. Knowing how where is safe to climb and where to avoid is not intuitive. Just knowing how to stay warm in winter can be a life or death situation.
During this alpine skills clinic, held in American Basin, participants will learn the basic skills for winter climbs. While there participants will try to utilize these skills to attempt the nearby 14ers or 13ers. Additionally, they will spend several nights in the backcountry learning winter camping and navigation skills.
This is an ideal training for those who wish to pursue winter climbing on a regular basis or are interested in using winter climbing as Denali and Alaska prep.
Previous climbing, hiking, and camping experience is important but not necessary. Please call if you have questions about the skills necessary to participate in this course.
