Spring Alpine Skills Clinic
Spring is the best season for alpine climbing for those who want to enjoy the beautiful weather and have some fun climbing peaks. Come learn the basic skills for climbing rock and snow while spending time in the backcountry around American Basin.

​​During this alpine skills clinic participants will learn the basic snow and rock climbing skills such as how to use the rope on exposed terrain and the when and how of using crampons on snow. While there participants will try to utilize these skills to attempt the nearby 14ers or 13ers. Additionally, they will spend several nights in the backcountry learning backpacking and navigational skills.

For those who have always desired to climb high peaks but never thought they had the skills this is an ideal way to learn the basics with someone who can give direct feedback on what you are learning.
Prerequisites
  • Previous climbing, hiking, and camping experience is helpful but not necessary
What to Bring
  • While meals are provided, participants must provide snacks for themselves during the day.
  • Clothing appropriate to cold weather. A full packing list will be sent upon sign up.
  • A 45-60 liter pack works well.
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses.
  • All climbing equipment including boots and crampons is provided but you can bring your own if you desire.
What You Will Learn
  • Basic rock and snow climbing techniques.
  • Navigation and other backcountry skills.
  • Snow climbing skills such as self arrest and basic use of crampons and ice axes.
  • How to avoid dangerous rock and snow conditions.
