Typical Meeting Locations:

Eldorado Canyon and The Flatirons have some of the most classic Front Range rock climbs in all of Colorado and many are known around the country. These might be some of the most classic routes but it is far from exhaustive

Climb Name Climb Description
Direct East Face of the First Flatiron (5.6, 10 pitches) For such an accessible climbing difficulty this is surely one of the most obvious and well known classics climbs in the Front Range. The First Flatiron looms over Boulder creating an unforgettable skyline. After a decent hike to the base (~30 minutes) climbers ascend the slabs for almost 1000' before following the ridge to the final summit. This is also a great prep climb for those interested in climbs in Rocky Mountain National Park or the Tetons. First Flatiron
Yellow Spur (5.9+, 6 pitches) This Eldorado Canyon route climbs a variety of unique features high on the Redgarden Wall with a variety of variations to increase the difficulty. With technical overhangs, slabs, and cracks it is great for well rounded climbers. From the top climbers can scramble back down the East Slabs and drop off the trail right back at the cars. Yellow Spur
East Ridge of The Maiden (5.10c, 6 pitches) Good things come to those who work for it. This climb is no exception. While the hour plus hike is sure to deter some, the aesthetic crack on the first pitch makes it worth the hike and it keeps away the crowds. A technical bouldering pitch with a bit of a reach finishes off the tough stuff before a few slab pitches finish things up. Thing get really interesting with a completely free hanging rappel from the summit where you can preview the even more challenging West Overhang (5.11c). The Maiden

Climbing in Eldorado Canyon and The Flatirons

There are few better known places to climb in Colorado than Eldorado Canyon and The Flatirons. While both are part of the same Rocky Mountain uplift that helped create Garden of the Gods and have some similarities when it comes to climbing these Front Range climbing spots couldn't be more different.

Eldorado Canyon has some of the most classic climbing routes in all of Colorado. Where South Boulder Creek has cut through the Fountain Formation it is packed with a variety of cracks, slabs, and roofs that make for exciting climbs in a dramatic landscape. The maroon rock is covered with bright green lichen and the cliffs rise hundreds of feet above the river which is the only real noise in this canyon besides climbers and birds. The climbing here has variety with a few spots for those just learning to climb as well as challenging routes for the more experienced. For anyone who wants to learn trad leading or multi-pitch climbing this is a great place to start. Many of the walls face south and while summer is great there are a high number of climbable days year round to keep this a favorite climbing spot in the Front Range.

The Flatirons are located in Boulder near National Historic Landmark Chautauqua Park Because the strata of these quartzite ridges didn't get quite as steep as elsewhere in the state they have a variety of lower angle faces rising a thousand feet in the air. Many of the climbs here are some of the easiest in the Front Range for their size and make a great first climbing experience for those prepared for heights but can also make a great training ground for those wanting to prepare for the Grand Teton or alpine climbs with us in Rocky Mountain National Park.
