Clear Creek Canyon Ice Climbing

With it's proximity to Denver this bustling canyon houses several quality ice climbs in the Front Range to meet the needs of climbers of all skill levels. The shade that makes this a great climbing area in the summer also helps the ice form once things cool down. While the low elevation can make it less reliable in dry years it generally forms around December and melts out in early March.

Since several climbs form this can be a great location to learn to ice climb or focus on some multipitch ice climbing skills or just enjoy the variety of different climbs in the nooks and crannies of this well travelled canyon. Thanks to the lower elevation and minimal snow there is unlikely to be avalanche concerns making for a low key location for both beginners and more advanced ice climbers.

Typical Meeting Location:

Clear Creek is well known as a sport climbing area but in the winter there are several great climbs that form here.

Climb Name Climb Description
Mickey's Big Mouth (WI3, 2 pitches) With the first pitch frequently toproped this is an enjoyable climb with easy access and several variations making for a great beginner outing. An additional pitch lies above the first with a short walk for those with a bit more experience wanting some more climbing.
Coors Lite(WI3, 3 pitches) With a nod to the well known brewery just down the road that owes it's existence to the water from Clear Creek this climb has three pitches separated by short walks. With the first pitch a full pitch of tiered shelves leads eventually to the shorter but more vertical second pitch and finally the last pitch which is lower angle and a good place to learn to lead.
Secret Falls (WI3, 1 pitch) While it's a bit of a hike you get to leave behind the highway sounds for a more natural experience. Although it's only one pitch it's best done with a 70M rope making it quite a long climb with a decently wide flow for a couple different climbing options. It's also the most reliable climb in the canyon.
